Your first RTTY contest

Set up PSRTTY
and enter the JARL WW RTTY Contest!

JARL takes over from the 34-year JARTS RTTY Contest in 2026. Why not try your first entry with PSRTTY?

Follow the steps from preparing PC and radio to your first QSO and log submission.

Preparation

Connect the radio to your PC

Install the model’s USB driver first, then connect the USB cable and turn on the radio. Continue after the PC recognizes it.

STEP 01

Download PSRTTY

PSRTTY official site: use Download at the top to get the ZIP, extract it and place the folder somewhere convenient on your PC.

STEP 02

Open Settings

After launch, use Radio → Basic / Radio / Audio settings.

STEP 03

Enter your station details

In Basic Settings, enter Profile name and your callsign. Naming the Profile after the radio helps identify it later.

A callsign is enough to proceed. Entering JCC/JCG now avoids later reconfiguration. Then select Radio.

STEP 04

Select and connect the radio

Choose your radio on the Radio tab.

ICOM radios

With one radio and its default CI-V address, leave COM on Automatic. With two or more radios, choose the target radio’s CI-V port.

Yaesu and Kenwood radios

Select the COM port; many Yaesu models use Enhanced for CAT.

Verify communication with Connection test, then press Connect.

STEP 05

Set the receive audio input

On Audio IN, select the device receiving radio audio. Even noise without a signal should produce a slight meter response.

Start at 50%; a visible response is enough. Do not raise the level just because noise is low. Press Save audio level after checking.

STEP 06

Set the transmit audio output

On Audio OUT, select the radio output. Before the roughly 10-second test, choose an appropriate clear RTTY frequency, check LSB-D/DATA-L and antenna SWR, and avoid interfering with others.

Press Test tone + TX-PTT and adjust TX level while watching ALC. If unavailable on screen, use the radio meter. Aim just below where ALC starts moving.

After adjustment, save the audio level, then press Save at the bottom.

STEP 07

Configure contest macros

Saving disconnects the radio temporarily. Open Edit → Macro settings, choose JARL World Wide RTTY Contest and Apply. Customize the resulting contest messages if needed.

Read the explanation, adjust SENT if needed, keep Fixed checked and Save.

STEP 08

Prepare to receive

Reconnect if disconnected at STEP 7. The following steps use real signals. For preparation only, confirming the Control window opens is enough for now.

STEP 09

Receive an RTTY signal

Open Control and Cross Scope, and optionally Sub-decode if the PC can handle it. Align the two spectral peaks with MARK and SPACE. If spacing differs, try Width RESET; if audio placement looks wrong, try Position RESET and realign.

Tune frequency until the cross-scope traces approach a cross. When detected, C tuning also shows the offset.

STEP 10

Enter the other station’s callsign

Click the callsign in a decoded [RX] CQ line to populate CALL. Automatic extraction may already have filled it. Before calling, check whether the station has been worked.

STEP 11

Call and log the QSO

  1. Press F2 to send your callsign.
  2. Check the returned exchange in RCVD. Correct it manually if interference caused incorrect auto-entry.
  3. Press F3 to send your exchange.
  4. After receiving TU 73 or another closing message and completing the QSO, recheck RCVD and press Add to log.

Automatic logging is available, but callers should start with manual logging because closing messages vary.

STEP 12

Try calling CQ

Find a clear frequency and send F1. On a response, verify callsign and exchange. AutoCQ can repeat calls once you are comfortable.

STEP 13

Correct a logged QSO

Double-click a recent QSO to edit input mistakes. Find older records through View → QSO log.

Follow prompts to enter station information. JD1 locations and other cases may not be determined from callsigns alone. Check calculated scores and multipliers.

STEP 16

Save and submit the file

Fill the remaining fields and save Cabrillo. Review/correct address details and calculated scores in a text editor. Do not change QSO records such as time, callsign or exchanged numbers after the contest.
