FT-818ND

FT-818ND has no built-in USB audio or USB CAT. Use an external interface: DATA for audio, ACC for CAT. This guide uses PSRTTY AFSK and CAT PTT.

Checked: 2026-10-15

Connection

Radio DATA (Mini-DIN 6) ↔ audio interface ↔ PC. CAT: ACC (Mini-DIN 8) ↔ compatible CAT interface ↔ PC. Radio CAT is logic-level; do not wire directly to RS-232C.

Digirig Mobile

Use Digirig Mobile 1.6+ in logic-level configuration. PC↔Digirig USB; black AUDIO↔DATA Mini-DIN6; green SERIAL↔ACC Mini-DIN8 with FT-8xx cables. Distinguish CI-V/RS-232C versions.

SCU-17 + CT-62

PC↔SCU-17 USB. Audio: SCU-17 DATA↔radio DATA using the supplied matching cable. CAT: SCU-17 CAT/RS-232C↔CT-62↔radio ACC. CT-62 converts electrical levels; a passive Mini-DIN adapter is not a substitute. Adjust TX/RX knobs.

Radio settings · AFSK

Hold F → select item with SEL → change with DIAL → hold F to save. Select DIG with MODE; set DIG MODE to USER-L.

ModeDIG
26 DIG MODEUSER-L: LSB side of DIG. After connecting, check this menu as well as the DIG display.
25 DIG MICDefault 50 (0–100). Keep working FT8 gain; adjust with interface TX and PSRTTY volume. Separate from SSB MIC GAIN and FM packet PKT MIC.
24 DIG DISP / 27 DIG SHIFTRecord existing FT8 values. Shared USER-L/USER-U display/carrier offsets. For a new setup, start at 0Hz and verify actual TX frequency.
14 CAT RATEMatch PSRTTY baud; start with the working FT8 rate.
NAR / RX filterStart with NAR OFF and a wide RX filter. Pass both 2085/2295Hz tones before narrowing.
DATA OUT 1200bps / RX audioUse a matching cable taking RX audio from DATA 1200bps output (pin5), GND(pin2), not the 9600bps output. Adjust level at interface RX and Windows/PSRTTY.

FSK keying transmission · Ver1.18

Example: DTR for FSK and CI-V/CAT for PTT. Adjust settings to your wiring and selected signals.

The manufacturer manual specifies AFSK operation for this model. Native direct FSK keying is not supported; use normal AFSK mode.

If FT8 already works

If FT8 works with DIG+USER-U, keep DATA cable, audio device and DIG gain. PSRTTY uses DIG+USER-L; restore USER-U for FT8. Plain USB with microphone-jack audio is a different path; do not apply this DATA-jack guide unchanged.

PSRTTY settings · AFSK

Select FT-818ND, Hamlib and CAT PTT. Use Digirig CAT COM or SCU-17 Enhanced COM, matching baud. Specify interface Audio IN/OUT. Close FT8, test connection; check DIG and DIG MODE USER-L. If switching fails, set DIG+USER-L manually and disable connection auto-switch.

No modulation

TX but no audio: DIG → USER-L → interface Audio OUT → DATA cable → DIG gain/TX level. Missing RX: 1200bps audio-output cable, Audio IN/RX gain. CAT fails: check jack selection, electrical cable type, COM/baud.
